Vico pace numero zero is a project of sonic exploration that investigates the sonic environment of one specific building located in Vicolo della Pace in Napoli.

In the province of Avellino, Italy, a ritual takes place each 12 September at the sanctuary of the Madonna di Montevergine, the “Black Maria”, or the “Ugly Madonna”. The night before, people gathers in the small village of Ospedaletto d’Alpinolo at the slopes of the montain of Montevergine, where tammurriate, the traditional music of this region, is played in honour of the Madonna. At dawn, people walks up the mountain until the top where the sanctuary is located. The entrance is constituted by a stair of 23 steps, symbolising the climbing of the mountain. In this recording, old women, holding one with each other by the arms, climb up the stairs one step at time, intoning a devotional chant to the Madonna for each step they take. This ritual is part of the cult of the seven Madonnas in the region Campania, Italy. It has its roots in pre-Christian rites related to the earth, to propitiate good harvesting.
